11 Best Movies about Treasure Hunt and Quests of all time - Open Chests

If the release of Uncharted this year proves anything, it's that movies about Treasure Hunts will always have an audience.  Over the decades, there have been a healthy number of films featuring quests and missions with maps. Here are the most popular.

1. Uncharted (PG-13) 2022

Released in February 2022, Uncharted is a race to unravel one of history’s greatest mysteries and treasures.  Street-smart thief Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor "Sully" Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to recover a fortune lost by Ferdinand Magellan 500 years ago. What starts as a heist job for the duo becomes a globe-trotting, white-knuckle race to reach the prize before the ruthless Moncada (Antonio Banderas), who believes he and his family are the rightful heirs.

2. The Goonies (12A) 1985

Orphaned and alone, except for an uncle, Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield), lives in the walls of a train station in 1930s Paris. Hugo's job is to oil and maintain the station's clocks, but to him, his more important task is to protect a broken automaton and notebook left to him by his late father (Jude Law). Accompanied by the goddaughter (Chloë Grace Moretz) of an embittered toy merchant (Ben Kingsley), Hugo embarks on a quest to solve the mystery of the automaton and find a place he can call home. Directed by Martin Scorsese.

4. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (PG13) 2017

Four high school kids discover an old video game console and are drawn into the game's jungle setting, literally becoming the adult avatars they chose. What they discover is that you don't just play Jumanji - you must survive it. To beat the game and return to the real world, they'll have to go on the most dangerous adventure of their lives, discover what Alan Parrish left 20 years ago, and change the way they think about themselves - or they'll be stuck in the game forever.

5. Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom (PG) 1984

The second of the Lucas/Spielberg Indiana Jones epics is set a year or so before the events in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Indy needs to retrieve a precious gem and several kidnapped young boys on behalf of a remote East Indian village. This time he teams up with a nightclub singer and a 12-year old boy.

6. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (PG13) 1989

An art collector appeals to Jones to embark on a search for the Holy Grail. He learns that another archaeologist has disappeared while searching for the precious goblet, and the missing man is his own father, Dr. Henry Jones. The artefact is much harder to find than they expected, and its powers are too much for those impure in heart.

7. Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (PG) 2008

It's the height of the Cold War, and famous archaeologist Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford), returning from his latest adventure, finds out his job at Marshall College is in jeopardy. He meets Mutt (Shia La Beouf), a young man who wants Indy to help him find the legendary Crystal Skull of Akator, and the pair set out for Peru. However, deadly agent Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett) is searching for the powerful artefact, too, because the Soviets believe it can help them conquer the world.

8. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (PG) 1975

9. The Mummy (PG13) 1999

The Mummy is a rousing, suspenseful and horrifying epic about an expedition of treasure-seeking explorers in the Sahara Desert in 1925.
